On April 7th 2018, our first SLIQ flow battery demonstrator turned 1!
The 8kW/30kWh system was installed for Knoydart Renewables to provide back-up power to their office when their hydro scheme goes down for maintenance or due to technical issues. The SLIQ allows the Knoydart Renewables staff to maintain office function and communications during the regular black outs experienced in Inverie.
The system has been used daily over the last year and has output over 4MWh in total.
The demonstrator has operated successfully with a DC-DC efficiency of 93%, not once requiring a switch to the backup bank of lead acid batteries.
Knoydart Renewables are pleased with the performance of the system and we are now exploring the feasibility of installing a large scale SLIQ at Inverie in the future with the option of transporting charged electrolyte to nearby fish farms. This would allow Knoydart Renewables to generate income by exporting their hydro generated power. We are working together to find suitable funding for this novel and exciting project.
Further detail on the project is available on our Case Studies page.
