Company Timeline

2013

Company founded

The company was founded as Power Migration Partners to develop battery energy storage solutions that unlock the full potential of renewable energy and help accelerate the clean energy transition

2014

Funding for first SLiQ

Secured initial funding to build the first prototype of our unique single liquid flow battery (SLiQ). Funding was provided by Scottish Enterprise through a SMART:SCOTLAND grant

2015

Engineering consultancy

Provided engineering consultancy services to develop control systems with power electronics for renewable energy technologies including wind, wave and tidal devices.

2017

Field trial of first SLiQ demonstrator

First SLiQ demonstrator installed in Knoydart, Scotland for Knoydart Renewables, the field trial was run successfully for two years.

2018

Rebranded to StorTera

Company rebranded to StorTera to highlight our commitment to sustainability and innovation. Stor is the Gaelic word for ‘store’ and Tera signifies our ambition to deploy 1 TWh of energy storage to support renewable energy deployment.

2018

Commercial battery systems

Launched lithium ferrous phosphate (LFP) battery and hybrid inverter solutions for remote/off-grid applications. Our first systems were deployed on the Island of Hoy.

2019

Peer to Peer energy trial

Started developing intelligent battery system controls and software. Our platform was used to support a groundbreaking UK peer-to-peer energy trial.

We reached the milestone of 100 installed systems this year with LFP batteries ranging from 5-500kWh.

2021

SLiQ patent granted

Patent granted for SLiQ technology.

2022

$1million grand prize winner

Awarded CAD $1million grand prize as technology provider for the best smart grid project in The Power Forward Challenge.

2023

10 years of innovation

Celebrated 10 years of pioneering innovation in battery technology. Awarded £5M of funding to further develop SLiQ as part of UK government funded Longer Duration Energy Storage (LoDES) Demonstration Programme.

2024

SLiQ Developments for emerging economies

Significant improvements in SLiQ costs and production as part of a project funded by The Faraday Institution in collaboration with the University of Strathclyde.

2025

Energy management platform

Developed our energy management platform for two innovative smart grid projects with frequency control, incorporating energy storage and EV charging, Knoydart and Isle of Eigg.

Our Sustainability Goals

Our Sustainability Goals

Supporting National and Global Initiatives

Considering people and the planet

At StorTera we are proud to support the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Scotland’s National Performance Framework which both aim to improve quality of life, sustainability and equality both locally and globally.

We monitor and actively target improvements in four of the UN’s SDGs:

SDG 7: Affordable and clean energy

Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.

Our work supports increased deployment of and investment in clean energy technology. We are also adapting our flow battery technology for emerging economies by lowering costs and exploring the creation of local capacity to maintain and repurpose our systems at end of life.

SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.

The innovative and collaborative R&D work we do creates novel academic research projects and PhDs, increase industrial R&D levels and helps make the UK a centre of research excellence in energy storage research. Our commercial projects help decarbonise businesses and local authorities and increase adoption of batteries and renewables by improving the business case.

SDG 12: Responsible consumption and production

Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.

We strive to minimise the carbon footprint of our flow battery technology and to build a circular economy around it. We are exploring remanufacture and repurposing opportunities for end of life and the use of raw materials from recycled batteries..

SDG 13: Climate Action

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

We all have a part to play in reducing global greenhouse gas emissions; at StorTera our mission is to develop more sustainable energy storage technologies which will help to unlock the full potential of renewable energy.

We also strive to be as responsible as possible in our day-to-day operations. We use renewable heating technologies, EV chargers and solar panels, we actively encourage and promote low carbon transport options, we default to buying locally where possible and of course ensure we recycle everything we can.
